GPS Data Files

We usually carry a GPS with us when we go for our walks to record the route (and make sure we don't get lost!). These route files are available on this site in GPs eXchange format (or GPX). This is a popular format for interchanging between various mapping software - I suggest one of the following for viewing them :

  • Memory Map - mapping software with OS map support which was used to record the routes. This one costs money, but I can certainly recommend it.

  • Google Earth - a fantastic piece of free software with streaming maps of the whole world. The detail on this can be astonishing, and is now pretty excellent for the island (you can clearly see individual cars and the County Show!)
Hint: if you have been using Google Earth for a while, but don't get good clear images of the island, clear your disk cache from the Options window - there seems to be a bit of a bug with expiring old images.

  • POI Edit - A handy free program for converting between GPS formats.

  • EasyGPS - Another handy free program for up and downloading track data from some models of GPS.
  • This is only a short list of the packages which load the GPX files, but I'm sure there are many more available for free or to buy. If you really can't load the file into your chosen mapping software, drop me an e-mail and I'll try and convert it.
