19/2/06 - Eight eternally optimistic members turned up at the Old Smithy car park in Godshill despite the persistent rain. Setting off southwards, we soon found some lovely mud to slither through on the way towards Appuldurcombe. Climbing the steep steps up Gat Cliff onto the down, we pause briefly in the driving rain to imagine the wonderful view. Continuing along the ridge, Dave found the glove he lost last week when he recced the walk in last Sundays rain. We sheltered from the strong winds to plan our attack and decided the full 10 mile plan wasn't a good idea but we couldn't cut back too soon so we carried on to Stenbury Down, then east off the top into the sheltered valley above Wroxall. Not wishing to climb up Wroxall Down into the wind again, we headed back along the valley, passing the impressive (from the front at least) Appuldurcombe House and the deserted Falconry Centre. Joining the Stenbury Trail we continued north to the road and back to the car park. It was generally agreed that we had done our duty, but all were looking forward to a warm bath and lazy afternoon.
