22/7/06 - 8 explorers made it to Rowlands Castle despite a train driver shortage. The skies to the south looked ominous as we set out north in the humid heat, quickly reaching Finchdean before heading up Idsworth Down for our first view of St Hubert's church. Stopping for a snack, we heard the history of Idsworth manors new and old thanks to the notes provided by Anne. Reaching the top of the Down, the geeks among us were treated to a private air display by a wandering Apache helicopter practicing some maneuvers. Descending down into Chalton for a quick look in the village church before visiting the pub for a pint and lovely lunch. Due to excellent leader planning, the days torrential downpour arrived as we sat in comfort, forcing us to reluctantly order another pint and watch the roads outside turn into rivers. Dragging ourselves from the pub into the light refreshing spits of rain, we headed across the valley. As the rain stopped we were confronted with a large puddle blocking the lane which we negotiated with ease until Steve gallantly offered Tracey a piggyback which nearly ended in an early bath as he stumbled into a deep spot. Turning south, we soon arrived at the quaint historic chapel of St Hubert's with it's ancient chancel and murals. Continuing on to the Stansted estate, we briefly ascended to the Avenue to look at the grand House before returning to Rowlands Castle for a well earned ice cream and a game of medieval rounders with a large chicken (the ice creams may have been spiked).
