05/11/06 - A fine, sunny and chilly morning welcomed the 14 walkers at the Quay Arts Centre, including 3 mainland visitors and a number of first time walkers plus 2 dogs. Setting off along the East side of the Medina, passing the docks and the playing fields there was an ominous sign as the head of the pack plodded off the intended route not realising we never take the obvious path. With the flock back under control, the leader bravely lead the way through the full moon high tide, passing the sad looking Ryde paddle steamer before having to pause for some expensive yachts at the marina. As a reward for good behaviour, we stopped at the Folly for a coffee break and a play with the swans. Climbing up to Whippingham past a sleeping (non dead) horse, we then continued into East Cowes along the road, pausing briefly in town for emergency rations, before proceeding to the sea front for lunch in the sun with various locals (and tourists) providing conversation. Returning to the floating bridge, across to West Cowes and a well subscribed loo stop (no Folly stop next time!). Making our way through Cowes to the old railway line, we were soon buzzed by rude cyclists and kids on mini-motos - Barney did his best to knock some off but failed. Gratefully turning off the track down to the pleasant river bank again the group splintered as the end was in sight. Passing the jetty used for loading wind turbine blades onto barges (for use off the island) then on past rowing club before re-entering the Newport docks and back to the Quay where the tide has dropped by at least 6 feet.
