5/06/07 - Ten walkers (7 regulars and 3 new ones) met at Parkhurst main car park for a Squirrel discovery (we hope!). It was a humid and hot evening and setting off along the marked ‘Squirrel Trail’ we soon saw our first exhibit – a noisy red squirrel chattering at us from his treetop position. Moving along, some of us rounded a corner to see another just in front of us on the path but it scurried away before those at the back could see it.
After that we were onto main paths and there were no more squirrels, just a brisk walk around the edge of the forest, with a few moments of indecision from the leader who couldn’t remember the way, luckily others could! Some of our party went the wrong way but we called them back eventually! We ended our walk by following the new squirrel sculpted signs and totem poles to the Squirrel viewing hide, but they were all hiding! Seven of us hastily retreated to the Blacksmiths Arms for a rewarding drink and something to eat, where the quantity of dogs in the bar decided us to sit outside to watch the glorious sunset and try to think of the most superlative description to take our minds off the fact that it was suddenly very chilly!
