17/6/07 - Meeting at the expensive car park in Newport (actually that could be any of them!) most of us immediately drove out again and parked in nearby streets. 16 of us then set out (quickly) through the bottom edge of the Pan estate and behind the football ground and were immediately into the countryside. Continuing through rolling fields we approached the Newport Golf Course for the customary "discussions" with the checked trouser brigade as we rudely used the public right of way. Passing through more fields, Archie risked the wrath of the Cows by drinking their water. Descending towards the lovely house at Great East Standen Manor (even the name is grand) we were greeted by a loud but relatively friendly Airedale. Stopping for some lunch in the sun before continuing along the top of the Down briefly before descending to Merston Manor. After a brief discussion on the route we chose the path less trodden and Gary was soon at the front hacking his way through the nettles. Finally emerging from the jungle back on to the cycle track we plodded along dodging the bikes and occasional dog deposit. Continuing into the town centre alongside the canal before returning via he cinema to the car park.
