27/1/08 - Meeting in the (unexpectedly free) National Trust car park, we huddled in the chilly breeze despite the brilliant sunshine. As we prepared to depart, Alison performed a neat handbrake turn into a space and we were away. Stepping out along the coast, we negotiated the latest shrinkage of the island as the fields slip into Compton Bay, where hardy surfers battled the waves. With the wind fortunately at our backs, we continued along the coast, stopping briefly for a coffee before turning inland at Chilton Chine. Climbing uphill through Pitt Place Lane we all decided it wasn't as cold as we thought it was. Onwards to the occupied Longstone, we stumbled on in a hunger induced trance to a fine sea view for lunch. Continuing on down the freshly tarmaced drive of Brook Hill House (Isle of Wight council please take notes), we finally found some proper mud for Alf to walk through. Glorious views along the coast as we approached Compton Farm, then back along the lane to the surfer filled car park.
