29/6/08 - A disappointing turn out at Yarmouth was boosted at the last minute by Bill running onto the ferry and increasing our numbers to an impressive four. A blustry crossing over to Lymington and onto the train, we spotted some impressive old cars out of the window waiting to embark. A nostalgic slam door journey to Brockenhurst was replaced by an air-conditioned high speed journey to Sway. We were met by an early Wessex Weekend Walker (WWW) and in a short time were joined by another 5 walkers finally breaking the double figures. After a brief stroll through the village we turned down the peaceful back lanes and soon entered Sethorns Enclosure. The forest was eerily quiet but we soon heard the tuneful birds tweeting in the trees. Venturing onto the open heathland the heather proved a colourful scene and the 'egg and bacon' plant glowed on the ground as the sun shone down. Crossing the road into Wilverly Enclosure we encountered some arm swinging men who appeared to be warming up for a run?? Continuing round the track we had a brief stop before heading up hill and onto the open plain for a well earned lunch spot. There was disappointment amongst the troops as the ice cream van failed to appear. Crossing the road again onto Longslade bottom we walked past some sleeping foals and up into the woods. Heading through the dappled forest and down we joined the old railway track and headed back over to Sethorns. Re-joining our original track for the last part of the walk we hunted for an ice cream shop in the village (again there were nearly tears) but had to do with a drink in a chilly local hotel's garden. Final goodbyes said we headed for the return train and looked forward to the WWW's joining us on the island for a walk soon.
